Getting Started with Logan Whistles

Although originally designed as shepherd's whistles, the quality and performance of our Logan Whistles make them suitable for any dog breed, and for other signalling uses - hiking, climbing, cycling or just when you need to be heard!

The whistle is a musical instrument so it does need practice to get the best from it, but it is an instrument that we instinctively know how to play tunes on.  You'll find that you quickly make your first sounds and then practice will help you make smooth tones and move from soft, to loud sharp whistle command sounds too. It's addictive as dogs love the whistle tones and will respond well to your new 'voice'.  Not everyone is a master at making complicated whistle sounds, but you don't have to be. Very simple sounds are just as effective and dogs don't mind a bit how proficient you are. The key is to be consistent in the tones you choose as the dog's whistle commands - even if you only have one, the recall whistle command.

Which whistle is best for a beginner?

All the whistles work in the same way so you can simply choose from our selection of whistles based on the material, weight and looks. Differences in sound performance matter to professionals but less so for a new user. We provide guidance on how to use a sheepdog whistle to help you get off to a good start.

Whilst any one of the whistle models is suitable for those new to this style of whistle, it's still useful to understand how the whistles differ so you can choose the one that may suit you best.

Can I use the Logan Whistle as a simple Recall whistle to get my dog to come back to me?

Because Logan Whistles were perfected for working dogs - so they have tones that dogs like, can hear and respond well to - they are also perfectly suitable for any dog breed and for simple but very important commands such as Stop and Come Back (or recall, That'll do).

You can choose your own recall command, one that you can produce easily and consistently, but here are a few examples
